At the top of Fort Mountain there lies the ruins of an ancient stone wall. The wall snakes over the mountain for almost 900ft and may have some astronomical alignment. Who ever built it was obviously determined, as it sits at an elevation of close to 3,000ft with no water source to be had. There’s at least a half dozen theories circulating as to who may have built it and why, one of the more intriguing involves a race of people known as the “Moon Eyes.” The Moon Eyes were nocturnal and lived underground, only coming out at night. These people were supposedly tall, light-skinned and had beards. According to legend, the wall is a remnant of a war that the Moon-Eyed people fought and lost against the Cherokee.
