At the entrance to Roan Mountain there’s a visitor center and small museum, they have on display, a piece of a Mastodon femur that was plucked from a farmers field in Johnson City.
Looking down off Roan into the valleys below, it’s not difficult to envision a time when great beasts roamed the landscape.
